Primary School

Academics

Foundation Phase

Small classes allow teachers to devote quality time to nurture and grow each learner. Reading, writing and phonics are taught in an integrated manner. By means of hands-on environmental education, children learn to respect and care for the natural environment.

IT, Drama, Xhosa, Art and Music form an integral part of the curriculum. For this age group the emphasis is on formalized learning of writing, reading and numeracy. Sport plays a major role in teaching team spirit and social skills. Children are encouraged to participate in team sports as well as individual sports utilizing the school’s sports facilities.

Intermediate Phase

In this phase we encourage the children to become independent learners and to integrate their knowledge holistically in all learning areas. The small class environment allows teachers to provide support and encouragement to all the learners.

At GBC, we encourage the LOVE of learning, and academic confidence.

In this Phase, the content is based on the Cambridge Curriculum in Maths, Science and English. We focus on bringing critical thinking and practical research into all of our lessons, to help prepare them for High School and the world beyond. IT, Music, Art, Culture and Sport continues to form an integral part of the syllabus and is offered on site.

Our academic calendar is made up of three cycles culminating in an end of year exam. During each cycle, our Gr 4 – 7 learners are evaluated by means of ongoing school-based assessments as well as formal cycle tests. At the end of each cycle the cumulative mark is calculated and a report is generated for each learner.

Learning is not only limited to the classroom. Various camps and outings are organised for each grade throughout the year to enhance the learning experience and allow pupils to learn more about the environment, science, history, conservation, leadership, problem solving and social diversity. In Grade 7 we appoint prefects who form part of the Primary School leadership team.
